We thought the campaign was over. On Day 14, thanks to our generous community, we reached our target of $20,000 in just 14 days! That will go a long way toward our total need of $25,000 to fill a funding gap. Thanks for your support.

BUT THEN ON THE MORNING OF DAY 15, A DONOR GAVE $500 and said “Every day, I see the positive effects of the work CJI does. Let’s go for the whole $25,000!”

With your generous and caring support we believe we can exceed our $20,000 target and raise the $25,000 we need to continue to provide uninterrupted services to women reintegrating from prison to the community. Are you with us?

It costs more than $214,000/year to incarcerate a woman in federal prison in Canada.

But only $5,000/year for CJI staff and volunteers to support a woman as she reintegrates back to the community through a Stride Circle.

Imagine a woman in prison deciding to change her life and succeeding because her community rallies around her. Imagine her children feeling happy and safe now that their mother is finally home and able to care for them. Imagine ending the destructive cycle of crime one family at a time.

Stride helps federally sentenced women to prepare for and successfully reintegrate into the community through building supportive relationships with volunteers during weekly recreation nights (Stride Night) in the prison. Reintegration counselling and mentorship Circles, formed by volunteers, support the women as they transition back to society. Stride also engages and prepares the community to receive the women through education and volunteer opportunities.

CJI’s innovative Stride program has already been replicated at another women’s prison in Winnipeg. But faced with a funding crisis, we may have to disrupt our invaluable services to women at Grand Valley Institution for Women in Kitchener, Ontario. Without the support of our staff and volunteers how many women will lose sight of their dreams of a new life? How many women will be released only to return to prison because they can’t make the transition from their old life and old friends? All for the want of $25,000 to fill in a funding gap.

Since 1998, CJI staff, with the help of volunteers who gave 190,000 hours, have assisted 71 women to return to the community through a Stride Circle. In the past 3 years, only one woman with a Circle has gone back to federal custody--her Circle was not active at the time.

How you can help:

1. Spread the word. Tell your friends and family members that more and bigger prisons are not the answer and that there are ways to successfully empower women to become a healthy part of the community.

2. Donate to help women permanently reintegrate from prison! If 150 people give $30 each or $450 people give $10 each we will reach our goal.

Thanks for making a difference!

*Note: All funds donated will be used for the Stride program even if our campaign goal is not fully met.
